Kargil Vijay Diwas: The historic Kargil war happened between May & July months of the year 1999, in the Kargil district of J & K.India’s passion and struggle paid off when India claimed victory on the areas occupied by Pakistani troops. In this war, so many soldiers were martyred. On 26th July, the country celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas.
The country pays homage to the martyrs and remembers the Indian soldiers’ sacrifices made during the war. On 3rd May 1999, the Kargil war began, when around 5000 Pakistani soldiers were infiltrated into the high altitudes of the Kargil’s rocky mountainous region and captured the area. In response to this, the Indian army launched ‘Operation Vijay’.
The war continued for several weeks. Finally, on 26th July, the Indian soldiers pushed back the Pakistani troops from the captured areas, and the war was ended.
Here are some interesting facts about the Indo-Pak war.
- Before India’s partition, Kargil was part of the Baltistan district of Ladakh. After the First Kashmir War, it was separated by the LoC.
- Before the Kargil war, another war has happened between India and Pakistan. This war led to the formation of Bangladesh
- On 3rd May 1999, some local shepherds noticed major activities in the foothills of Kargil. Later, it was discovered that those activities were carried out by the Pakistani troops and terrorists.
- On 26th May, the IAF (Indian Air Force) launched ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ and used planes like MiG-27, MiG-21, and Mirage 2000 to attack Pakistani soldiers.

- To block Pakistani ports, the Indian Navy launched ‘Operation Talwar’ at the time of war
- During this conflict, more than 2.50 lakh shells, bombs, and rockets were fired.
