International Day of the Girl Child 2024: Every year, 11th October is celebrated as Girl Child Day. This occasion marks the importance of adolescent girl children and attempts at identifying their potential and power by opening opportunities for them. It also aims at empowering the girls around the g.lobe.
Throughout the world, girls face gender-based challenges like discrimination, child marriage, violence, and lack of learning opportunities. The Girl Child Day 2024 come up with the theme of Digital Generation, Our Generation.
History
The first conference that identified and talked about girl children’s rights was the Beijing Declaration. The World Conference on Women in Beijing was conducted in 1995. All countries unanimously adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
On 19th December 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring the 11th October as the International Day of the Girl Child. This day mainly focuses on the importance of acknowledging the challenges that girls face across the world and empowering them towards the fulfillment of their human rights.
International Girl Child Day: Significance
Sustainable Development Goals that were adopted in the 2017 year include achieving gender equality and women empowerment. This day’s motive is to assist young girls who have access to better health services, equal opportunities in education without any gender discrimination or violence.
International Day of the Girl Child 2024: Theme
The theme set for this year is “Digital Generation, Our Generation.” Because of the pandemic, the world sits in front of laptop/mobile screens for learning and earning, around 2.2 billion people across the globe still don’t have internet connections.
This has made them being pushed off the margins, especially the girls. On a global level, the gender gap of internet users has jumped from 11 to 17 percent from 2013 to 2019. This percentage is around 43 percent for the least developed countries.
