New Delhi: The government today approved a deal with Airbus Defence and Space of Spain to purchase 56 C-295MW transport planes, which will replace Indian Air Force planes that were inducted more than 60 years ago. The contract, which has been approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security, will see the Tata consortium manufacture the majority of the units.
According to a press release from the Press Information Bureau, the military transport aircraft will replace the Indian Air Force’s ageing Avros. According to sources, this could cost between Rs 20,000 crore and Rs 21,000 crore, depending on the exchange rate.
According to the press release, 16 C-295MWs will be delivered in flyaway condition from Spain within 48 months of signing the contract, while Tata will produce 40 of them within 10 years.
‘This is a first of its kind project in which a military aircraft will be manufactured in India by a private company,’ the report said.
For quick response, the C-295MW has a rear ramp door for paradropping troops and cargo and can carry 5 to 10 tonnes of cargo, according to a press release.
To be replaced by Avro, a twin-engine turboprop military and freighter aircraft from the United Kingdom (UK). With a maximum speed of 452 kilometres per hour, it can carry 48 paratroopers or six tonnes of freight. In the early 1960s, the Indian Air Force adopted it.
“The Electronic Warfare Suite will be installed on all 56 C-295MWs. The project will boost India Warfare Suite’s aerospace ecosystem “”, read the press release.
