Southwest monsoon will say goodbye in a few days..17 percent extra rain this year – Balachandran
The southwest monsoon season in Tamil Nadu is from June to September. Heavy rains in Kerala last June lashed the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and the Western Ghats.
The southwest monsoon is coming to an end soon. The northeast monsoon is about to start in a few more days. Balachandran, the Southern Regional Chairman of the Meteorological Department, told reporters about the current monsoon. He told reporters at the Meteorological Department in Nungambakkam that Tamil Nadu received 39 cm of rainfall during the southwest monsoon season from June 1 to September 30, with a normal rainfall of 33 cm, which is 17% more than normal.
For Chennai, the rainfall was 50 cm and the normal was 46 cm, which is 7% more than normal. Southwest monsoon is reported to be normal in 26 districts and higher than normal in 14 districts. He said 68% more than normal was found in Perambalur.
Light to moderate showers are likely at many places in Tamil Nadu and Puthuvai due to the prevailing atmospheric circulation in the interior of Tamil Nadu. He said there was a possibility of thundershowers at a few places in Vellore, Tirupati, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Thiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu, Ranipettai, Dharmapuri, Salem and Namakkal districts.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the southwestern Bay of Bengal on October 2, 3 and 4 as the current rains will continue for the next two to three days due to humid winds blowing from the east.
Balachandran also said that the Indian Meteorological Department will make a long-term announcement on the northeast monsoon this evening.

Chennai: The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains in Tamil Nadu from today till October 4. Heavy to moderate to heavy rains are expected in a few places today and tomorrow due to the circulation of the atmospheric overlay.
Although the southwest monsoon season has reached its final stage, the monsoon has poured down in many towns. Most districts of Tamil Nadu have been receiving heavy rains for the last few days due to atmospheric circulation. Districts including Chennai and Tiruvallur received light showers.
9 cm of rain was reported in Pattukottai. Pudukottai received 8 cm of rain, Erode district received 7 cm and Namakkal and Madukkur received 5 cm of rain. Trichy, Thiruvarur and Peravurani received 3 cm of rain each. Cholavanthan, Aruppukottai, Vadippatti and Vembakkam received 2 cm of rain each. Ramanathapuram, Vellore Thiruthuraipoondi received 1 cm of rain each.
Bleaching for heavy rain
Due to this atmospheric circulation, the northern districts of Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvallur, Ranipettai, Thiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli and Pudukottai will have one or two locations. It also forecast light to moderate rain in the above districts tomorrow.
Heavy rain for 2 days
Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and coastal areas are likely to receive light to moderate showers with thunder and lightning. Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts are likely to receive heavy showers with thunder and lightning. The delta districts of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Nagai are likely to receive heavy showers with thunder and lightning.
Chance of heavy rain
The southern districts of Madurai, Sivagangai, Theni, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari will receive thundershowers during the next three days from October 2 to 4. The delta districts of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai are likely to receive heavy rains with thunder and lightning.
Moderate rain
The Met Office has forecast light to moderate showers in a few parts of Chennai for the next 24 hours.
The maximum temperature is reported to be 32 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is 26 degrees Celsius.
Strong winds
Strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected in the southern Sri Lankan seas and southeastern Bay of Bengal today. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea from October 2 to 4 as strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected in the Kumari Sea, Gulf of Mannar and southwestern Bay of Bengal.
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast a storm in the Arabian Sea tomorrow. The deep depression that once existed in Saurashtra has now strengthened into a depression and is located in the northeastern Arabian Sea and adjoining areas. It is a zone of deep depression that continues to move westward for the next 12 hours. It will continue to intensify into a storm in the next 24 hours. It then moves west-northwest, leaving the Indian Ocean and moving closer to the Pakistan Macron coast. The depression formed by Hurricane Gulab strengthens into a hurricane and then weakens again across the coast, forming a storm in the Arabian Sea, to be named Shaheen in Qatar.
