Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was the younger sister of Jawaharlal Nehru and was born on 18th August 1900, in Prayagraj (then Allahabad). Vijaya Lakshmi was one of the many women who fight for Independence from British rule.

- Initially, Pandit name was Swarup Kumari Nehru but after her marriage, she changed it to Ranjit Sitaram Pandit
- After the revoluting of her against the British rule, she was imprisoned three times by the British in 1932-33, 1940, and 1943
- In the year 1937, she was elected as a member of the United Provinces Legislative Assembly. In the year 1939, she resigned to that post to protest against the British during World War 2
- Pandit served as the President of the All-India Women’s Conference from 1941-43
- She was also the first woman to be elected UN General Assembly president
- From 1962-64, she served as a governor of Maharashtra state
- In 1978, Pandit served as India’s representative to the United Nations Human Rights Commission
