20 Years of 9/11: On 11th September 2001, the world’s most dangerous extremist attack happened.
The extremists rammed two American passenger planes into World Trade Tower in New York. In this incident, so many have lost their lives.
What was targeted
On that day, four passenger planes were hijacked by suicide bombers in the Eastern US. They used these planes to attack the most famous buildings in Washington and New York.
Two planes collided with World Trade Center’s two buildings in New York. The first plane hit the north tower and the second plane hit the south tower at 8:46 am and 9:03 am local time respectively. The buildings caught fire because of this accident. The 110-story building collapsed completely just within 2 hours.
At 9.37 am, the third plane collided with the headquarters of the US Department of Defence, Pentagon. The fourth one crashed at 10.30 in the Pennsylvania plains.
How many people died
A total of 2977 people excluding 19 extremists died in this incident.
- 246 passengers and crew were there in four planes and all died
- 2606 people died in the buildings of WTC (World Trade Tower)
- In the Pentagon attack, 125 people died
Who were the attackers?
The Islamic extremist group named Al Qaeda carried out all these attacks from Afghanistan. The accident was carried by 19 Al Qaeda attackers. In 19, 15 extremists were from Saudi Arabia, 2 were from UAERemaining two are from Lebanon and Egypt.
Things That Changed After 9/11 Attacks
After the September 11 attack, the aircraft security system increased significantly. In the US, the Transportation Security Administration was formed to investigate airports and airplanes.
The World Trade Center (WTC) building was re-erected with a different design is renamed and now called Freedom Tower. In the pentagon, the destroyed part was rebuilt within a year.
