Renowned ghazal singer Bhupinder Singh, known for classics such as “Dil Dhoondta Hai” and “Naam Gum Jayega”, died on Monday due to suspected colon cancer and some Covid-19 related complications at a city hospital. He was aged 82 years.
During his long journey in the movie industry, he is best known for songs like “Ek Akela is Shehar Mein”, “Do Diwane Shehar Mein”, “Duniya Chhute Yaar Na Chhute”, “Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Aasman”, and “Karoge Yaad Toh”, among others.
According to Bhupinder’s wife Mitali Singh, herself a noted singer, the veteran singer was admitted to the hospital following a urine infection, where he was diagnosed with Coronavirus.
Amritsar-born singer Bhupinder Singh is survived by his India-Bangladeshi wife and a son.
In his five-decade-long-career, Bhupinder Singh had worked with the biggest names in the music industry, from RD Burman, Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Madan Mohan, Gulzar, Asha Bhosle, to Bappi Lahari, among others.
Bhupinder Singh started his career in the All India Radio, Delhi, as a musician and singer. During one of the All India Radio parties, composer Madan Mohan spotted him and called him to Mumbai.
Bhupinder’s Bollywood singing debut was a Mohan-composed track “Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bulaya Hoga”, where he sang along with Talat Mahmood, Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey. Two year’s later, he got his first solo track with “Rut Jawan Jawan Raat Mehrbaan”.
He became inactive in playback singing in the 1980s after he got married to singer Mitali. The duo collaborated and produced private albums.
Apart from playback singing, Bhupinder Singh also worked as a guitarist on several popular tracks including “Chura Liya Hai”, “Dum Maaro Dum”, “Mehbooba O Mehbooba”, and “Chingari Koi Bhadke”, among others.
