Former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida is destined to become the next prime minister after winning the ruling party’s leadership election. Prime Minister Kishida will succeed Yoshihide Suga, who resigned just one year after taking office in September. Kishida is likely to be elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party in parliament on Monday, with the party and coalition dominating the parliament. Fumio Kishida defeated Taro Kono in the final after appearing in front of two female candidates, Sanae Takaichi and Seiko Noda, in the first round.
