Following the appointment of Rohit Sharma as India’s new Twenty20 international captain, the BCCI’s top brass is expected to meet with Virat Kohli to discuss the future of his one-day international captaincy. The BCCI, according to sources, wishes to relieve Kohli of the captaincy burden in limited-overs cricket so that he can focus on his batting and reclaim his dominant form. Changes in Team India’s ODI captaincy could occur as early as January 11, 2024, when the bilateral series against South Africa begins, according to sources. In 50-over cricket, Rohit Sharma is expected to lead the team, with KL Rahul assisting him.
Regarding the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand, sources told NDTV that Virat Kohli has decided to rest for the first Test on November 25 in Kanpur. In Kohli’s absence, the team will be led by vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. According to sources, Rohit Sharma will be rested for the two-match Test series against New Zealand because there are only a few days between the second Test and the start of India’s Test series in South Africa.
On Tuesday, Rohit Sharma was named captain of the T20I team, as the BCCI announced a 16-man squad for the three-match series against New Zealand, which begins November 17 in Jaipur.
On December 17, India will begin a three-match Test series in South Africa. Following that, there will be a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series and a four-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series.
The Indian team has just returned from a disappointing ICC T20 World Cup campaign, in which the Virat Kohli-led side was knocked out in the quarterfinals after losses to Pakistan and New Zealand.
Following the retirement of former captain MS Dhoni, Kohli took over as captain of the limited overs teams in January 2017. He has been in charge of the Test team since the beginning of 2015. Kohli has captained India in 95 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and has a 70% win rate with 65 victories and 27 defeats, which is the best among captains who have captained the country in 90 or more matches. He is also India’s most successful Test captain in terms of match victories.
Kohli led India to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final and the 2019 ICC World Cup semi-finals, but he has yet to win a major tournament trophy as captain.
