The operator of Delhi’s airport, DIAL, intends to build an air train to improve passenger connectivity between Terminal 1 and the other two terminals. The busiest airport in the nation, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), is run by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) and has three terminals: T1, T2, and T3.
A design, build, finance, operate, and transfer approach will serve as the foundation for DIAL’s implementation of a “elevated and at-grade Automated People Mover (APM) System.” The APM, or air train, has already been put out to bid.
Seamless connectivity between terminals
Through Aerocity and Cargo City, the APM system is intended to offer dependable, quick, and seamless connectivity between Terminal 1 and Terminals 2 and 3. The route spans roughly 7.7 km. The technology will save carbon emissions, increase ASQ scores, and facilitate passengers more easily, according to information on the airport’s website.
“APM system is intended to provide reliable, fast and seamless connectivity between Terminal-1 and Terminal-3/2 spanning route length of around 7.7 km via aerocity and cargo city. In addition to providing required connectivity between terminals, APM system will enhance passenger convenience, improve ASQ score and reduce carbon footprint,” the website stated.
It has not yet been made clear what the eligibility requirements and the deadline for bids are for prospective bidders.
What are Air Trains?
Worldwide, passengers can travel between terminals without charge thanks to air trains. These systems, which serve as monorails at several international airports, make traveler mobility easy and hassle-free. This connection is frequently used by travelers to go between terminals, especially on transit flights. At predetermined stops, air trains come and go on short schedules.
Why is Air Train needed at Delhi Airport?
The busiest airport in India is still Delhi Airport, with over 70 million passengers annually. The airport intends to double its capacity to 130 million within the next 6–8 years to handle its growth, underscoring the pressing necessity for an air train.
Currently, passengers go by road from Terminal 1 to Terminals 2 and 3. Terminal 1 is positioned somewhat apart from these terminals. On August 17, the new Terminal 1 went into service.
