The Income Tax department searched properties and institutes linked to former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh in an alleged tax evasion case for the second day today, local police officers said.
After searching the homes of NCP leaders in Nagpur and Katol, as well as the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Fetri the day before, I-T officials arrived at the Shri Sai Shikshan Sanstha’s office in the Ramdaspeth area here today.
Officials added that searches at the NIT in Fetri were also ongoing.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was dispatched to protect I-T officials.
According to sources, the investigation was centered on a 4.18 crore donation allegedly received by the Shri Sai Shikshan Sanstha.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had previously claimed that the money was deposited in cash with four Delhi-based companies, which then transferred it to Shri Sai Shikshan Sanstha Trust, a charitable trust controlled by Mr. Deshmukh and his family.
The 71-year-old leader is also being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation in a bribery case involving former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh.
