National Mathematics Day is celebrated every year across India to raise awareness about the importance of Mathematics in daily lives and how mathematics plays a major role in an individual’s daily life. The great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22nd December 1887. Hence, on the occasion of his birth anniversary, Mathematics Day is celebrated in India on this day every year.
National Mathematics Day: History
Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh announced this day as National Mathematics Day on 26th February 2012. On the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, he visited the Madras university and paid tribute to Ramanujan. Since then, 22nd December is celebrated to honor the work and achievements of Ramanujan in the mathematics field.
Ramanujan was a great mathematician who was born on 22nd December 1887 into a Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family in Erode, Madras Presidency.
Significance
The motive behind the celebration of National Mathematics Day is to raise awareness about the importance of mathematics. On this day, training is also provided to the mathematics teachers and students and highlights the development, production of teaching-learning materials (TLM) for Mathematics and research in related areas.

Mathematics Day is celebrated in schools, colleges, universities, and all educational institutions in India. The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) and India work together to spread mathematics education.
