National Voters’ Day 2022: 25th January is observed as National Voters’ Day in India. On this day, the Election Commission of India (ECI) creates awareness about the need to participate in the electoral process by voting. The people who attain 18 years of age get the eligibility to cast their votes.
National Voters Day: History
ECI (Election Commission of India) initiated the National Voters Day in 2011. A Union Council of Ministers meeting was held under then Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. It was noticed that young people who were of voting age were reluctant to register themselves as voters and hence this led to the founding of National Voters’ Day. 25th January was chosen as the date of observance of National Voters’ Day to commemorate the founding of the EC on this day in 1950.
National Voters Day: Significance
The Government of India celebrates National Voters’ Day to identify eligible ones to vote, inspire people to vote, and assure voters about the safety of the electoral process. Various states conduct competitions, and cultural activities to create awareness about the voting importance.
National Voters Day: Theme
National Voters’ Day 2022 theme is ‘Making Elections Inclusive, Accessible, and Participate’. Last year’s theme was ‘Making Our Voters Empowered, Vigilant, Safe and Informed’.
