On Wednesday, new one-day captain Rohit Sharma took over from current captain Virat Kohli. The opening batsman took over as Test vice-captain from Ajinkya Rahane.
Rohit was named the team’s T20I captain prior to the New Zealand series. White-ball cricket was about to undergo a paradigm shift, according to NDTV. Virat Kohli resigned as India’s T20I captain following the ICC T20 World Cup. The appointment of Rohit Sharma as ODI captain marks the end of Virat Kohli’s limited-overs captaincy.
The BCCI made the announcement alongside the announcement of the 18-man squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa, which begins on December 26 in Centurion.
After missing the home series against New Zealand due to injury, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur, and premier paceman Jasprit Bumrah are all back.
Due to injuries, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Shubman Gill were all left out of the team.
Off-spinner Jayant Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin were both retained in their positions.
The wicket-keeper positions have been reshuffled with Wriddhiman Saha and Hanuma Vihari returning to the squad following a successful tour of South Africa with the India A team.
The following is the full squad for the Test series between India and South Africa
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant(wk), Wriddhiman Saha(wk), R Ashwin, Jayant Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Mohd. Shami, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Shardul Thakur.
Rohit could take over as white-ball cricket captain to assist him in building a team for the ICC World Cup in his home country in 2023. Kohli has led India’s one-day international team to great success up to this point, except that he has yet to win a major International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy.
Kohli led the team to the ICC Champions Trophy final in 2017 and the ICC World Cup semi-finals this year. He has a 70% success rate in one-day internationals, having won 65 of the 95 matches in which he has led the team. Following the retirement of MS Dhoni, he was appointed as India’s limited-overs captain in January 2017.
