Navjot Sidhu, the party’s Punjab chief, announced last week that he would resign if the state government removed APS Deol from office.
Another of Navjot Sidhu’s demands before the elections next year was met by Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Channi, who accepted the resignation of Advocate-General APS Deol.
The resignation of Attorney-General APS Deol has been accepted by the Punjab cabinet, Mr Channi and Mr Sidhu announced this evening.
He predicted that the position would be filled by tomorrow
This comes just a few days after the Chief Minister appeared to support Mr. Deol.
The central government, according to Chief Minister Channi, has received a list of candidates for the position of Punjab Director-General of Police, which is currently held by Iqbal Singh Sahota.
Mr. Sidhu stepped down as Punjab Congress chief and resigned as chief minister after a bitter feud with Amarinder Singh.
He was supported by the Gandhis during his bitter feud with Singh, and now the ex-chief minister has resigned and formed his own party, putting the Congress in jeopardy in the upcoming election.
Mr. Sidhu stated last week that he would only return to work if APS Deol was removed from his position.
After his predecessor, Atul Nanda, resigned in the aftermath of Amarinder Singh’s resignation, Chief Minister Channi appointed Mr. Deol as the Punjab government’s top lawyer.
According to insiders, Channi initially refused to resign when offered by Deol, indicating that the Chief Minister wielded power over the MLA.
Although today’s U-turn demonstrates Mr. Sidhu’s ability to sway party decisions, it also shows that the Chief Minister’s relationship with his state’s political boss will almost certainly play a role in the party’s re-election prospects.
Mr. Deol recently chastised Sidhu for his “repeated utterances (that) seek to derail the state’s earnest efforts to ensure justice in the “drugs matter” and “sacrilege cases.”
His criticism of the current government was cited as proof that Mr Sidhu was “spreading misinformation to gain a political advantage over colleagues” ahead of the general election next year.
Mr. Deol wrote that “vested interests are making a concerted effort to malign Congress party functioning in view of the upcoming Punjab elections for their own selfish political gain.”
