The Tirath Singh Rawat took oath as a Chief Minister of Uttarakhand state, just a few months back on 10th March 2024. Before him, Trivendra Singh Rawat was worked as the Urratakhand state’s CM.
The Uttarakhand’s CM, Rawat has given his resignation to the Governor of that state, Baby Rani Maurya, late at night. As per the reports, the BJP legislature party of Uttarakhand will have a meeting today to decide the person for the vacant Chief Minister position. In the next year, the Uttarakhand Assembly elections are going to be conducted.
Tirath Singh Rawat said “I am expressing gratitude to the BJP’s central leadership, that has assigned so many responsibilities. I have been worked as MLC, MLA, MP, Party Presiden, and most recently Chief Minister. From the bottom of my heart, I thank party president JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” He also added that the Election Commission is not going with the by-election, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is no official announcement on this by the Election Commission.
Reason For Resignation
Due to the state constitutional crisis, Rawat has resigned from the CM post. Rawat was not elected as MLA in the Assembly elections of Uttarakhand. But, he was a Lok Sabha MP of the Pauri Garhwal constituency.
Article 164 (4) of the Constitution says, “If any minister isn’t a member of Legislature of the State for 6 consecutive months period then they’ll be at the expiration of that time period cease to be a Minister.” So, Rawat has to be a win as MLA by September 10, to remain in the Chief Minister chair.
A person can be elected in either the legislative assembly or the legislative council of a state to be in compliance with the constitutional clause. But the Uttarakhand has no upper house. So, the option left for Rawat to remain in the CM seat is to take participation in the by-poll election to become an MLA.
