World AIDS Day is an international day that is observed on 1st December to raise awareness about the life-threatening disease, HIV AIDS. The spread of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection leads to AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) which attacks the immune system of the patient.
The AIDS Day 2024 theme is ‘Rock the Ribbon‘.
World AIDS Day History
This day was designated by the Public Information Officers, Thomas Netter and James Bunn in August 1988. The two officers then took their idea to the Director of the Global Programme on AIDS. This concept was approved and hence December 1st is marked as AIDS Day.
For the first two years, the theme of this AIDS day was focused on youth and children. Today, AIDS Day has become one of the most recognized health days which provides an opportunity to raise awareness.

World AIDS Day Significance
UNAIDS lead campaigning for World AIDS Day since the year 2004. World AIDS Campaign’s Global Steering Committee has been selecting the theme for this day, keeping in mind civil society, non-profitable organizations, and government agencies.
This year, UNAIDS is looking forward to ending inequalities that drive AIDS and others in the world. As per the UN, without any action against inequalities, the world has to target ending AIDS by 2030.
