World Oceans Day: Oceans take up more than 70% of the earth’s surface and over 90% of our planet’s habitable surface. Roughly 97% of water found on this globe is in the oceans. Oceans provide food and livelihood to us.
World Oceans Day 2024: Date
World Oceans Day is observed every year on June 8 to make people aware of the negative impact of human activities such as sewage, oil leaks from ships, garbage disposal, and drilling station accidents.
World Oceans Day 2024: Theme
The World Oceans Day 2024 theme is Revitalization: Collective Action for the Oceans. The United Nations Division hosts the celebration for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, and it is produced in partnership with the non-profit Oceanic Global.
World Oceans Day: History
On June 8, 1992, at the Earth Summit of the UNCED (United Nations Conference on Environment & Development), the Oceans Institute of Canada proposed the idea of the observance of International Oceans Day. In 2008, UNGA (United Nations General Assembly), led by Canada, passed resolution 63/111, through which they declared that June 8 to be observed as World Oceans Day every year.
World Oceans Day: Significance
Awareness on a large scale is needed to preserve our oceans and their rich biodiversity. Be it, fishermen, individuals, or corporate bodies, all must realize the importance of maintaining the oceans’ health for their own good.
