Kaal Bhairava Ashtami: Significance
Bhairava is originated from the Bhiru word (Meaning – fear). This Mahadev’s avatar is also known as Dandapani (meaning – the one who punishes). According to the Hindu scriptures, Brahma grew arrogant and took pride in being the universe creator. Hence Kaal Bharirav removed one of the five heads of Lord Brahma with his Trishul to punish him. This was done to remind Brahma that ego, pride, and arrogance lead to downfall.
As per the scriptures, on Kaal Bhairav Jayanti, Kala Bhairava appeared with four hands and teeth protruding outwards. He held a sword/noose/snake in one of the right hands and a skull (Kapal) in the other. In the two left hands, he held a Damru (drum) and a trident (Trishul). The dog is the mount of this form of Mahadev.
On the Kala Bhairav Jayanti, devotees perform puja and remain awake all night. They offer food to the dogs.
