Jawaharlal Nehru’s Death Anniversary: Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India and was also the longest-serving PM of the country. He raimed in office for about 17 years – from 1947 to till he died at the age of 74 years on May 27, 1964.
Fondly called Chacha Nehru, he loved children very much and his birthday is celebrated as “Children’s Day” across the country. It is said that he was the architect of modern India and laid the foundations of various institutions that today contribute to India’s growth, security, and development.
Early life
Jawaharlal Nehru studied at home under private tutors till the age of 15 years and then he went to England to pursue higher education. He returned to India at the age of 22 years to practice law with his father, Motilal Nehru. But Nehru was jumped straight into politics.
As a student, Jawaharlal Nehru would study about nations that struggled against foreign domination. He was drawn into India’s freedom struggle.
Tryst with Congress and Mahatma Gandhi
Jawaharlal Nehru attended the INC (Indian National Congress) meeting in Bankipore, Patna, as a delegate in the year 1912. Four years later, he met Mahatma Gandhi for the first time and was inspired by him.
In 1920, Nehru organized the first Kisan March in Pratapgarh district, Uttar Pradesh. During the period 1920 to 1922, he was imprisoned twice in connection with Non-Cooperation Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Jawaharlal Nehru became theCongress General Secretary in September 11923. He was sworn in as the first PM of India on 15th August 1947.
Nehru died of a third and deadly stroke on 27th May 1964.
