The Aligarh district panchayat has submitted a proposal to the Uttar Pradesh government to change the city’s name to ‘Harigarh.’ Another idea is making the rounds to rename Firozabad district Chandra Nagar.
Many cities and railway stations in Uttar Pradesh have had their names changed in recent years, with Allahabad-Prayagraj being the most noteworthy.
Many organizations had already petitioned the UP government to change the name of Aligarh.
The proposal was sent this time by members of the newly formed district panchayat. The plan was first submitted to the panchayat by the Kshastriya Mahasabha, and it was later backed by elected members Kehri Singh and Umesh Yadav.
The plan was subsequently approved by the district panchayat in a unanimous vote.
The Uttar Pradesh government will make the final judgment in this regard.
Vijay Singh, a relative of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh’s son Rajveer Singh Raju, heads the district pacnhayat in Aligarh.
The Aligarh district panchayat has also requested that the UP government name the future Aligarh mini-airport after Kalyan Singh.
This suggestion, which comes only six months before the 2024 UP Assembly elections, is expected to become a talking issue.
Earlier this month, a group of BJP legislators and a state minister met with CM Yogi Adityanath to demand that the names of districts, cities, and towns be changed, shortly after the central government renamed the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna awards.
