Bhai Dooj: History
As per the Hindu scriptures, Goddess Yamuna was very close to his brother, Lord Yama. For a long time, they both did not come face to face. Finally, two days after Diwali, Lord Yama came to meet his sister. The Yamuna felt overwhelmed and applied Tilak on his forehead and cooked delicious food.
Lord Yama was deeply touched by this and asked his sister to ask for a boon. Then, she asked him to visit her every year and said that every person, whose sister applies Tilak on his forehead, shall not fear her brother Lord Yama as the sister’s love will protect them. God of death, Yama granted this boon and from that time this festival is celebrated every year and has become a part of the Diwali celebrations.
