Harish Rawat has asked to be relieved of his duties as the party’s in-charge of affairs in Punjab, citing the upcoming assembly elections in Uttarakhand, where he serves as the campaign committee head for the Congress.
He stated that in order to be able to concentrate on the approaching Assembly elections in Uttarakhand, he had considered seeking to be relieved of his responsibilities as the party’s in-charge of the party’s Punjab affairs.
This, the former Uttarakhand Chief Minister said to reporters in Dehradun on Thursday when they inquired whether he had requested to be released of his duties as Punjab affairs in-charge so that he could focus on the impending elections in his home state.
The politician went on to say that he would follow whatever instructions were provided to him by the party.
In response, Mr Rawat stated, “If my party asks me to remain (as in-charge of Punjab affairs), I will continue.”
Both Punjab and Uttarakhand will hold elections the following year.
While the Congress seeks to maintain power in Punjab, it hopes to reclaim control of the state by defeating the ruling BJP in the state’s hill region.
Navjot Singh Sidhu, the state Congress president, and the administration of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh are engaged in a power struggle in Punjab.
As part of his meeting with the party’s top leadership, Harish Rawat recently stated that the Punjab Assembly elections will be fought under the leadership of Amarinder Singh, a jab at the leaders who want him removed from power. Harish Rawat is now in Delhi for the meeting.
Mr. Rawat had also stated that the Amarinder Singh-led administration in Punjab was not in danger of being overthrown.
Mr Rawat responded to Navjot Sidhu’s remark, in which he requested that the party high command grant him the power to make decisions, by saying that party heads are free to make judgments within the bounds of the party’s traditions and constitution.
“In order to understand the context in which Navjot Singh Sidhu made these remarks, I will need to see them. Mr. Sidhu is the well-respected commander of the Punjab division. If not the state presidents, then who would have the authority to make decisions on their behalf? “On Friday, he spoke to media in New Delhi.
Mr. Rawat went on to say that state presidents are allowed to make judgments within the bounds of the party’s constitution and platform.
Mr. Navjot Sidhu had previously stated that the party’s top leadership should grant him the flexibility to make decisions, and that he would work to guarantee that the Congress Party remained in power for the next 20 years. He stated that he had put together a road map in this regard.
