The ICN (International Council of Nurses) is celebrating this day since 1965. 12th May is also the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Florence was a social reformer and she made nursing a renowned profession.
In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, proposed the Nurses Day to President Dwight D. Eisenhower did not approve it.
In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate Nurses Day as it is the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. Every year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses’ Day kit which contains educational and public information materials.
