Isaivani was born in 1996 in Royapuram, Chennai, as the youngest of four children to Sivakumar D and Selvi. Her father, a self-taught keyboardist who encouraged her musical ability and singing from an early age, encouraged her to sing to Isaivani and her brother while she was still in the womb. Her father’s show business career began when she was six years old. By 2018, she had appeared in approximately 10,000 performances alongside her father. When she was a teenager, she began singing Tamil film songs and gaana covers because people seemed to enjoy them. Sabesh Solomon, a gaana musician, contacted her in 2017 and encouraged her to audition for Tenma’s new band, The Casteless Collective.
Because of the band’s decision to hire her, she became one of the world’s first professional female gaana singers. Aside from that, despite initial opposition from those who believed gaana should be kept as a male-only art form, she has achieved success in a male-dominated and high-caste-dominated genre of music. In 2018, they released “Beef Song” in response to Dalit lynchings, and in 2019, they released “I’m Sorry Ayyappa” in response to the Sabarimala temple controversy. Because of her presence on stage, other women have been inspired to become gaana performers.
Isaivani, a popular Gaana singer from Chennai, is a member of the popular indie band The Casteless Collective. In recognition of her work with Gaana, Isaivani received the BBC’s 100 Women Award in 2020. According to the BBC’s report, “Isaivani, a Gaana singer, is well-known in India. Gaana music was born in a working-class neighbourhood in north Chennai (formerly Madras). Isaivani hasn’t sung or performed in this largely male-dominated environment in a long time.”
