Ashtadasa Shakti Peethas History:
A great king called Daksha Prajapathi, who is the son of Lord Brahma had 27 daughters and Sati Devi is one among them. Lord Shiva married Sati Devi. When Daksha Prajapathi entered the Yaga area, which was performed by Agni, as a mark of respect everyone stood up, except Lord Shiva. Hence, Daksha felt insulted and when Daksha conducted a Yaga himself, he did not invite his daughter and son-in-law. Sati felt bad because of no invitation and wanted to attend the Yaga against Lord Shiva’s wish. Sati attended the Yaga and no one cared for her and felt bad. When Daksha started abusing Lord Shiva, she was not able to control her feelings and sacrificed herself with the creation of Agni from Earth with her foot right thumb. Knowing this, Lord Shiva removed Jhatha’s bunch from his head and hit it on the earth. Lord Veerabhadra has born from that and rushed to Yaga’s spot and killed Daksha. Then Lord Shiva went and took the Sati’s body from the fire and started dancing with it. The whole world is terrified of this Tandava Nritya and to stop this Nritya, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra and cut the Sati Devi’s body into pieces. These parts have fallen at different places in India and Sri Lanka. The places, where ever these body parts have fallen are called Shaktipeethas. 18 such places are there and they are called Ashta (8) Dasa (10) Shaktipeethas.

Among these Shakti Peethas, the Kamakhya, Ujjain, and Gaya are considered the most sacred ones. Because they symbolize the mother goddess with three most important aspects:
Creation – Kamarupa Devi
Annihilation – Mahakali Devi
Food – Sarvamangala Devi / Mangalagauri
If we carefully observed, we can see a perfectly straight line from Kamakhya to Ujjain via Gaya, which symbolizes that the creation will be destroyed without fail, one day.
