Mahavir Jayanti 2024: The birth of the last spiritual leader Lord Mahavira who was the 24th Tiranthkara of Jainism is the most significant festival of Jains. The festival of Lord Mahavira falls on the 14th of April annually.
According to the Gregorian calendar, the festival is celebrated in March or April every year.

Lord Mahavir also known as Vardhamana, the 24th of last Tiranthkara of Jainism was born on this day in the 6th century in Kundalagrma Bihar. Tirthankara is the teacher who transmits religious knowledge.
The prince and last Tirthankara of Jainism was born to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala of the Ikshvaku Dynasty. Lord Mahavira left all the worldly possession as he had no expression in running the empire and soon he took the spiritual path to practice Jainism. He was born in 599 BC while the Digambar Jains believe he took birth in 615BC.
Lord Mahavira believed in non-violence, Satya (truth), Brahmacharya (chastity), and Aparigraha (non-attachment). His knowledge and teachings were put together by his main disciple, Indrabhuti Gautama.
How Mahavira Jayanti 2024 is celebrated?
On the day, Jain believers engage in prayers, acts, pujas, charitable activities, and fasting. The lord Mahavira idol is carried out on a chariot which is called rath yatra. Following the chariots, religious rhymes are recited. Mahavira statues are also given a ceremonial anointment called Abhisheka.
Jain temples are decorated with, flags, lighting, and offerings are given to poor and needy people. People also donate to the gaushala, temple, and many places for good causes such as saving animals from slaughter and helping poor people.
The celebration includes eating the Satvik diet which includes vegetarian meals as eating onion and garlic is prohibited in Jainism.
