Renowned theatre, movie, and TV serial actor VP Khalid, popularly known for his portrayal of the Sumersh role in the TV serial Marimayam, passed away following a cardiac arrest on Friday (June 24) morning in Vaikom. According to the sources, Khalid collapsed at the shooting location of a movie directed by Jude Antony featuring Tovino Thomas at Vaikom.
Khalid, a native of Chullikkal near Fort Kochi, was found unconscious in the morning in the washroom. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead.
The 71-year-old actor started his career at the age of 16 as a drama artist. He became popular with his role as Sumesh in the Marimayam show. He made his debut with the movie titled Periyar directed by PJ Antony in 1973.
VP Khalid was associated with popular drama troupes such as Alleppey Theatres and Cochin Sanathana and had acted in dramas such as Dracula, Ezhunnallathu, and Ancham Thirumurivu. He has also acted in many movies like Ponnapuram Kotta, Enipopadikal, and others. His son Khalid Rahman works as a music director in the Malayalam industry. The other two sons are cinematographers Jimshi Khalid and Shaiju Khalid.
The body has been shifted to Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital for the postmortem.
