National Pollution Prevention Day is observed annually on 2nd December in memory of the people who lost their lives in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy happened in 1984. This horrific industrial accident took place due to the leak of Methyl Isocyanate gas in the UCIL (Union Carbide India Limited) pesticide plant on the night of December 2-3. So many people were died due to the spread of the toxic gas. Bhopal gas tragedy is one of the world’s worst industrial disasters to date.

The Bhopal gas tragedy showed that the pollution and presence of toxic gases in the environment can be dangerous. Hence, this day is observed not only in honor of people who lost their lives in the tragedy but also to spread awareness on managing and controlling industrial disasters, preventing pollution from industries, or human negligence.
The pollution prevention day also aims to spread awareness about the prevention of pollution of natural resources like soil, air, water, noise.
