PPCC (Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee) chief Navjot Singh Sidhu tendered his resignation from the post on Wednesday. This development came a day after Congress President Sonia Gandhi asked the PCC presidents of Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, and Manipur to give resignations in order to do a reorganization of PCCs. Subsequent to the directives of Gandhi, Uttarakhand Congress chief Ganesh Goyal also submitted his resignation taking moral responsibility for the defeat of Congress in the Assembly elections.
Sidhu’s one-line resignation letter read, “To, the President All India Congress Committee. Respected Madam, I hereby resign as President PPCC”. Sidhu, who lost the Amritsar East seat to Jeevanjyot Kaur of AAP (Aam Aadmi Party), was at the epicenter of a political storm when he took on the then Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh ahead of the Punjab assembly polls.
In the recently concluded Punjab Assembly elections, the Congress government was overthrown by the AAP which bagged 92 seats out of 117. In Goa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Manipur, the party put up a lackluster performance, triggering calls for leadership change in the party.
