What is Open & Distance Education?
Even those who do not go to school can study in the open education system. Previously, there was an environment where even a degree could be studied. However, due to the many problems that arise, one can study for a degree, diploma, or certificate based on basic qualifications. The environment in which only +2 graduates can study for a degree has now developed in open education as well. This open level education system is provided by Indira Gandhi National Open University across the country and Tamil Nadu Open University in Tamil Nadu.
Distance education can only be provided by accredited universities. It is not possible to provide open education through private training centers. Private training centers, a few years ago, offered open and distance education. It was banned by the University Grants Commission following complaints of multiple irregularities. In addition, universities in Tamil Nadu can provide distance education only within Tamil Nadu. The UGC has also said that its training center should not be set up in other states.

For those who have dropped out of school due to various reasons, distance education is a good option. This education system can be used by those who want to learn something new and those who want to study the professional course that they are doing professionally. The distance education system lends a hand not only to them but also to many who think they have to pay full attention to competitive exams to get into government service. Many people who work in government institutions study the courses required for promotion through distance education. The list also includes IAS officers and deputy vendors. Therefore, there is no need to doubt its credibility, say the university.
Some private companies, however, say in their recruitment advertisements that remote students should not apply. Panneer Selvam, Regional Director, Indira Gandhi National Open University, said that this was due to the perception that those who studied remotely were not involved informal training.
