According to Navjot Singh Sidhu, the state party unit chief who resigned today, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s new government should have exercised greater caution when making decisions. The current crisis within the Punjab Congress could have been avoided if this had occurred.
According to cricketer-turned-politician Surinder Dalla, who spoke to NDTV today, Congress leader Amarinder Singh claimed today that Mr. Sidhu may leave the party and join another.Mr Dalla stated that Mr Sidhu was fighting for principles. In other words, “the primary issue for any political party or elected representative is the issue of one’s own state.”
When asked if Mr Sidhu had any objections to legislator SS Randhawa being appointed as Punjab’s minister, Mr Dalla said, “It was more a matter of allocating ministries based on “who should get which.” The question was whether or not progress had been made on the 18 points that had been agreed upon from the start.”
Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as Chief Minister after months of internal party criticism, and the state Congress President insisted that they had no personal issues. He was adamant.
Several issues that had irritated Mr Sidhu during Mr Singh’s tenure, such as sacrilege and certain government appointments, were raised. Mr Dalla responded by asking if the new government had formed a team to address these issues.
“In retrospect, the party and government should have taken a unified stance on the matter. What if Captain Saab had agreed to the plan all along?” Mr. Dalla made the following remarks.
‘People’ will be enraged if the new government does not follow that line from the start, even after a change in leadership.’
Is it possible that Mr. Sidhu will change his mind about resigning now?
“I’m not in a position to comment right now. What will the state party chief tell the people if we don’t follow the party line?”
