The state government denied Congress leader Rahul Gandhi permission to visit Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday in order to prevent many opposition leaders from visiting the district. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, his sister, is among them.
According to a letter sent by the Congress to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Rahul Gandhi will lead a five-member delegation to the district. In the statement, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s detention was also described as “without any reason or justification.”
The state government denied the request shortly after, according to news agency ANI, citing orders prohibiting large gatherings.
Despite her 38-hour detention, Congress general secretary Sonia Gandhi Vadra claimed on Tuesday that she was being held illegally in the Sitapur police compound, that she was denied access to legal counsel, and that she had received no notice or FIR.
According to her statement, neither she nor her legal counsel had been permitted to meet with a magistrate or other judicial officer since the morning she was arrested.
This statement merely clarifies the ongoing illegality of my confinement at the PAC compound in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh “She stated. “At this time, I will not go into detail about the completely illegal physical force used on my colleagues and me during my arrest.”
“I’m not aware of any orders or notifications being sent to me. They have not even given me a copy of the FIR report. I’ve never appeared before a magistrate or other court official, as far as I’m aware. My legal counsel, who has been waiting at the gate since the morning, has been denied entry as well.” Furthermore, the Congress leader stated.
