Veer Savarkar Death Anniversary: Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (28 May 1883 – 26 February 1966), well-known as Veer Savarkar was a freedom fighter, lawyer, politician, writer, social reformer. He was the leading person in the Hindu Mahasabha.
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar: Early Life
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was born on 28th May 1883 in a Hindu family in Nashik, Maharashtra. He was named ‘Veer’ for his courage from an early age and was popularly known as Swatantryaveer Savarkar.
Veer Savarkar: Contribution
Savarkar propagated the Swadeshi idea and was against foreign goods. He was arrested in 1909 for plotting an armed revolt against the Morley-Minto reform. In the teenage age, he formed a youth organization named ‘MitraMela’ to bring in national and revolutionary ideas.
Veer Savarkar: Writing
Veer Savarkar wrote a book named ‘The Indian War of Independence, 1857’ during his jail period. He also wrote a book titled ‘Hindutva: Who Is a Hindu?’ defining Indian culture as a manifestation of Hindu values.
Legacy of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar
The Indian government released a postage stamp to commemorate Savarakar in 1970. In the year 2002, the airport at Port Blair, capital of Andaman & Nicobar was renamed Veer Savarkar International Airport. A portrait of Veer Savarkar was unveiled in the Indian Parliament in 2003.
