With eight months left for the Asian Games 2024 to start on 10th September at Hangzhou, China, the AICF (All India Chess Federation) is hopeful of a rich medal haul from their men’s and women’s teams. The AICF has roped in Chess grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand to mentor the Indian Chess teams.
In the Guangzhou Games 2010, India only got two bronze medals. To make a big difference, AICF started the preparations well in advance by selecting ten members each for the men’s and women’s teams.
The team selection has been based on their International Rating. The men’s team will be selected from K Sasikiran, B Adhiban, Karthikeyan Murali, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujarathi, P Harikrishna, Nihal Sarin, S L Narayanan, Abhijeet Gupta, and Surya Shekhar Ganguly while the women’s team will be selected from Vaishali R, Tania Sachdev, Mary Ann Gomes, Soumya Swaminathan, K Humpy, D Harika, Bhakti Kulkarni, Vantika Agrawal, and Eesha Karavade.
The selection committee members Dibeyandu Barua, Abhijit Kunte, and Dinesh Sharma will decide the final list of five players in April. The chess games will start on 11th September and will be played in two formats. The individual event of men and women will be played in rapid time control from September 11-14 while four board five-member team events will be played from September 16-24.
