The non-profit organization named ATR (American Tortoise Rescue) which was established in 1990 started marking World Turtle Day in 2001. This year, it was the 22nd International Turtle Day that they are celebrating. This organization which was founded by Susan Tellem and her husband Marshall Thompson, has rescued and re-sheltered about 4000+ turtles and tortoises.
