Just a couple of days ahead of Republic Day, on Monday Amazon received the flak on Twitter over selling products with the imprint of the Indian National Flag. The product sold by the E-commerce giant include T-shirts, keychains, chocolate wrappers, and mugs. This was noticed by the Twitteratis and made a call to immediately boycott the products following the insult to the Indian flag.
Following the country’s flag code, “The flag shall not be used as a portion of costume or of any description. It shall not be printed upon napkins, boxes, or handkerchiefs.”
Amazon sells products with national flag imprint
Many hashtags such as #Amazon_Insults_National_Flag and #Amazoninsultsnationalflag are trending on Twitter. There are numerous tweets with these hashtags.
Notably, most of the products with the Indian national flag imprint are rated above 3.5, 4.
Is Amazon in a habit of insulting the Indian national flag?
This is not the first time that Amazon has tried to mint by insulting the tricolour. Earlier also, Amazon sold shoes and metal hoops for shoelaces resembling the Indian flag colours on its US website. Also, on the Canadian website of Amazon, doormats resembling the Indian tricolour were kept on sale.
In both instances, there was a massive outrage, however, the Indian government had called on the Amazon to respect Indian sensibilities and feelings. Amazon India is committed to respecting Indian laws and customs.
