The Government of Tamil Nadu has increased the appointment age limit for government school teachers by 5 years. Accordingly, the maximum age limit for direct appointment of a teacher has been raised from 40 to 45 for the general category and from 45 to 50 for the other category.
This ceiling is set only once as a special event, until December 31, 2024. The Government of Tamil Nadu has stated that from January 1, 2024, the maximum age limit for direct appointment of teachers will be 42 for the general category and 47 for other categories.
The age limit for appointment of government school teachers and staff in the Tamil Nadu School Education Department was 57 years. With the retirement age at 58, the government followed the rule that appointments could be made up to a year in advance. Retirement age for civil servants in Tamil Nadu has been raised to 60. Accordingly, the graduates expected to be employed up to the age of 59 years.
Instead, the school education department has set the age limit for teachers at 40. This decision provoked opposition from various quarters. Following this, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyamozhi held consultations with the department officials regarding raising the appointment age limit for teachers. The matter was discussed and a report was submitted to Chief Minister MK Stalin.
In this context, it is noteworthy that the Government of Tamil Nadu has increased the age limit for appointment of school teachers by 5 years.
