Gujarati New Year is celebrated on the next day of Diwali. This year, it falls on 5th November. As per the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Pratipada of the Karthik month. This new year is also called Bestu Varas, which is considered a very important day for the Gujarati community.
According to the Indian calendar which is based on Lunar Cycle, Kartik is the first month of the year and the new year in Gujarat falls on the Kartik month’s first day.
Gujarati New Year 2024: Significance
On the Gujarati New Yera, many businessmen and traders start their fresh financial accounts. A swastika is made at the beginning of the new account books which is followed by Shubh-Labh written on it. Many Gujarati people believe that doing this will bring good luck and profit to the business throughout the year.
In the Gujarati culture, the ritual called Chopda Pujan is performed, which is devoted to Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed that worship of Goddess Lakshmi with pure intentions and devotion helps in making the new year more profitable, peaceful and prosperous. There is no specific time or Tithi to pray and perform rituals. This special day coincides with Annakut Puja or Govardhan Puja.
Bestu Varas: Celebrations
Gujarati New Year is celebrated by people sporting new clothes, visiting the temples, and meeting relatives & friends. They exchange New Year Wishes with popular terms like Nutan Varsh Abhinandan or Saal Mubarak. Other aspects of this festival include decorated homes and fireworks. Delicious sweets and snacks are prepared and distributed to relatives and neighbours.
