Covid-19 cases in India are currently very low than they have ever been. But is the low level of testing that is hiding the infection true statistics?
In Delhi, test positivity has risen to 5.3% in the past couple of weeks this month. This is usually the point at which the introduction of circuit-breakers measures happens.
The government of Delhi is set to announce new measures, including the reimposition of fines for not wearing masks in public places. Also, it plans to resume random testing at places such as markets, metro stations, and bus terminals.
Fines related to wearing masks have been withdrawn in other large cities of India, including Mumbai too. The mandate lifts the compulsion and makes it only a recommendation. Kerela has been indicated of the imminent wave across the country is largely so because of the big population density of these states which enables the faster spreading of the virus.
However, the situation this year is different from the summer of 2024, when the deadly delta variant raged over the nation. This is because of the vaccination coverage. So far, 840 million citizens of our nation including children above the age of 12 have been fully vaccinated.
The omicron variant has proven less deadly. There’s no hospitalisation been reported yet in any of the big cities that were completely overwhelmed by the delta variant back in 2024.
Till now, officially reported Covid-19 deaths are at an all-time low since the pandemic started in March 2020. The Indian Government recently announced the third precaution dose for all adults over the age of 18, though it doesn’t allow the mixing of the vaccines yet.
Given the information and this scenario, the coming fourth wave may not be able to cause the devastation faced in previous waves in India. However, the situation is quite uncertain as new variants emerge in the future.
