The drama never seems to end. Johnny Depp is now appealing the $2 million defamation award a Virginia jury awarded his ex-wife Amber Heard at her trial in June. The news comes a day after Amber formally announced her intention to appeal against Johnny’s defamation court ruling against her.
Johnny Depp is suing Amber Heard for defaming him in a 2018 Washington Post article in which he described himself as a victim of domestic violence. According to Deadline, in documents filed in Fairfax County, Johnny Depp is citing a $2 million defamation award. In the verdict, a Virginia jury awarded that money to Amber Heard in their trial last month. The four-page notice of appeal said: “Plaintiff and counterclaim-defendant John C. Depp, II, through counsel, hereby appeal to the Court of Appeals of Virginia from all adverse judgments and the final judgement of this circuit court entered on June 24, 2024,” the four-page notice of appeal said.
Johnny’s appeal comes in response to Amber’s July 21 appeal seeking to overturn a $2 million award a Virginia jury awarded Amber in her $100 million counterclaim, and her 2019 $50 million lawsuit, Deadline reports. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2009 and started dating a few years later. They got married in 2015. At the time, Johnny Depp was in a long-term relationship with French actress Vanessa Paradis, while Amber Heard was with photographer Tasya Van Ree. After their former partners broke up, they started dating secretly in 2011.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got engaged in 2014. The news broke when a photo of the actress with an ornate engagement ring surfaced. They finally tied the knot in 2015 in a very private ceremony on Depp’s private island in the Bahamas. In 2016, Heard filed for divorce, claiming that Depp physically abused her while under the influence of drugs or alcohol during their marriage. Depp denied the allegations, saying Heard was “attempting to secure an early financial settlement by proving abuse.” Their divorce was finalised in 2017.
Johnny Depp later sued Amber Heard for defamation over a libel he wrote in The Washington Post in 2018. An op-ed headlined “I spoke out against sexual violence — and was shamed in our culture.” That has to change, “he said. Heard is a survivor of domestic violence. However, she did not mention Depp.
