Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai said on Thursday that his government will form a special team to investigate the gang-rape of a college student in Mysuru and that the perpetrators will be apprehended and brought to justice as soon as possible.
“Once the DGP (Director General of Police) and I arrive in Bengaluru, we will immediately form a special team,” the chief minister, who was in the national capital for two days, told PTI.
“We will not budge (on the investigation),” he stated.
Mr Bommai also criticised Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra’s comments that the girl and her male friend should not have gone to the deserted location and that the opposition Congress was attempting to “rape” him by targeting him over the incident.
“I simply disagree with my Home Minister’s remarks about the gang-rape incident. “I have advised him to provide clarification,” the chief minister said, adding, “I have directed the officials to investigate the matter thoroughly and keep me updated on developments.””
Mr. Bommai previously told reporters, “It’s a regrettable occurrence. It has been taken seriously by my government. The perpetrators will be apprehended and brought to justice as soon as possible.”
The college girl was allegedly raped by five men near Chamundi Hill in Mysuru late on Tuesday, and the incident was only recently discovered.
The girl and her male friend, both of whom were assaulted by the gang, are being treated at a private hospital.
In response to the opposition Congress’ criticism of the state government on the state of law and order, Home Minister Jnanendra said, “Rape has occurred there, but the Congress was attempting to rape me, and they are currently attempting to rape the Home Minister. They are attempting to gain political clout. It is a deplorable act.”
