Krishna Janmashtami 2024: Lord Krishna is considered as one of the avatars of Lord Vishnu, the preserver in the trinity. His birth is widely celebrated as Krishnashtami or Gokul Ashtami or Krishna Janmashtami. In Hindu epics, Krishna is described as the god of love, compassion, and tenderness.
Date and Timing
Krishnashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha in the Bhadrapada month. Usually, this festival falls in August or September. This year Krishna Janmashtami will be observed on 30th August. On this day, the puja for Krishna is performed in Nishita Kaal because he was born at midnight. This year, this will be between 30th August, 11.59 PM to 31st August, 12.44 AM.
On the Krishnashtami, devotees observe fast and break it after performing the puja. Paran, which means completion of the vow can be done after 5.58 AM on 31st August.
Significance
Lord Krishna is known as the preserver of Dharma and slayer of Adharma. So, his birth is celebrated in the country as Krishnashtami.
Celebrations
The festival rituals and celebrations start early in the day with the decoration of Krishna idols with flowers and peacock feathers. Devotees offer white butter, milk, and curd to god, after his birth at midnight.
