Maharishi Valmiki is considered the master of many languages. he was the first poet of the Sanskrit language. He has written 7 Kandas and twenty-four thousand verses in Ramayana. On the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti, the achievements of Maharishi are remembered and the holy Ramayana is worshipped.
Who was Maharishi Valmiki
According to some scriptures, Valmiki was the grandson of Maharishi Kashyap and Aditi. He was the ninth son of Maharishi Varuna and Charshani. Valmiki is also called Maharishi Bhrigu’s brother. It is described in some Puranas that Valmiki was stolen by a Bhilani in his childhood and was brought up in the Bhil society itself. When Valmiki grew up, he became a robber.
The Name Valmiki
Maharishi Valmiki observed a severe penance and at that time termites surrounded him and made a home on his body. After the completion of penance, Valmiki came out of the Termites’ house. As the Termites’ home was called Valmiki, he was named Valmiki.
From A Robber to Maharishi
As per some scriptures, the real name of Valmiki was Ratnakar, earlier was a robber and tried to rob Narad Muni. Narad Muni asked Valmiki whether the family would also be ready to bear the fruits of sin with you? Then Valmiki asked the same to his family and they were not ready for it. Ratnakar apologized to Narada Muni and Narada advised him to chant the Rama name. While chanting the Rama Nama, the robber Ratnakar became Valmiki.
Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti: Celebration
Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated in the northern parts of India by Hindu devotees. On this auspicious day, people take part in great processions called Shobha Yatras and walk through the Valmiki region’s streets, which is represented by a priest dressed in saffron robes with papers and Placards in his hands. Devotees perform rituals in the shrines.

As per the Hindu calendar, the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month begins from 7.03 pm on 19th October, Tuesday to 8.26 pm on 20th October, Wednesday. Hence, Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti 2024 will be celebrated on 20th October, Wednesday.
