STORY: Vikrant, also known as Vicky Rai, is murdered at his own party to celebrate his acquittal in the rape and murder of two young girls. Jagannath Rai, the Home Minister of Chhattisgarh, Called the CBI investigation. Suraj Yadav and Sudha Bharadwaj are the officers in charge of the inquired and investigation of six suspects.
REVIEW: The nine-part series is based on Vikas Swarup’s 2016 novel “Six Suspects,” which begins with Vivek aka Vicky Rai, the son of Uttar Pradesh Home Minister, shooting and killing bartender Ruby Gill in a popular New Delhi restaurant.
This scene was nearly identical to the Jessica Call murder case, in which Manu Sharma, the son of politician Venod Sharma, shot the model after she refused to serve him drinks at a luxury resto-bar in the Capital.
Director Tigmanshu Dhulia, Vijay Maurya, and Puneet Sharma adapted and wrote the series, which begins with cops stopping a car at a checkpoint because the inspector needs a lift. However, the fact that the driver runs when asked to open the boot raises suspicions, and the cops find the death of two young women inside.
The vehicle is registered with the name of Chhattisgarh Home Minister Jagannath Singh’s son, businessman Vikrant nicknamed Vicky Rai.
After his influential father pulls a few strings and bribes the police officers investigating the matter, he is acquitted. On the third anniversary of his arrest, Vicky hosts a party at the family farmhouse in Chhatarpur to mark the end of the investigation.
Dhulia, Maurya, and Sharma have done a fantastic job adapting Swarup’s novel, and their story will have you guessing who killed Vicky and why. Furthermore, each of the suspects, from Munna and Ekiti to Shabnam and Mohan Kumar, has a grudge against Vicky and a compelling cause to see him dead.
His narrative technique, which includes recounting the story from the perspective of the characters and a lot of back-and-forths, have you glued to your seat and your eyes fixed to the screen, waiting to see what happens next.
He’s also made sure to include the local flavor in his narrative as it moves from Delhi to Rajasthan, Andamans, Kolkata, Chennai, and Jharkhand, among other places.
Pratik Gandhi gives a strong performance as Suraj Yadav, a CBI officer with a political agenda. When he’s reporting to political heavyweight Ambika Prasad, interrogating the suspects, pushing his stance when discussing the case with Sudha, or succumbing to Rita Sethi’s charms, he aptly portrays the various shades of Suraj Yadav. Richa Chadha, who plays no-nonsense cop Sudha Bharadwaj, holds her own against Gandhi’s Suraj Yadav, and, like him, has her own goal.
Ashutosh Rana plays Jagannath Rai, a politician who prioritizes his political goals and ambitions over everything and everyone, even his family. Mohan Kumar, who can also be Mohandas when it suits his purposes, is played impressively by Raghubir Yadav.
Sharib Hashmi , Paoli Dam, Shashank Arora, Jatin Goswami, and the rest of the ensemble cast play well.
Rishi Punjabi, the series’ cinematographer, photographed the series genuinely while treating the various settings differently. The editing by Unnikrishnan P P and Prathamesh Chande keeps the story moving forward, while the music by Raghu Dixit and Ketan Sodha adds to the drama.
Even though it is based on a book, this Ajay Devgn-produced series is compelling to watch due to its suspense, drama, and superb performances by a diverse ensemble cast.
