Teachers inspire us to do well and succeed in life. To recognize this hard work of our gurus and mentors, Shikshak Divas or Teacher’s Day is celebrated in India. World Teachers’ Day is observed on 5th October, but every country celebrates on different dates.
In India, the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan is celebrated as Teachers’ Day. He was the first vice president of India, philosopher, statesman, and highly respected teacher.

In India, Teacher’s Day is celebrated every year on 5th September to mark the birthday of the former president, philosopher, scholar, and Bharat Ratna awardee, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born in the year 1888 on this day.
History & Significance
When Dr. Radhakrishnan took the office of the President of India in 1962, his students approached him to seek permission to celebrate 5th September as a special day. He instead made a request of them to celebrate 5th September as Teachers’ Day, to recognize the teachers’ contribution to society.
Since then, 5th September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day across colleges, schools, universities, and educational institutions.
Celebrations
For school going students, this day means getting gifts to profess their affection for their favourite teachers. For senior students, Teachers’ Day is one of reversal roles and celebration.

About Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
- Dr Radhakrishnan born in a middle-class Telugu family on 5th September 1888, in Tiruttani town
- He worked as a Philosophy Professor at Madras Presidency College and the University of Mysore
- He was honoured Bharat Ratna in the year 1954
- Radhakrishnan was nominated for Noble Prize, 27 times – 11 times for the Nobel Peace Prize and 16 times for literature
