The deadline for filing income tax returns has been extended until December 31, the government announced on Thursday, despite the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing technical issues with its website. Normally due by the end of July, the deadline was extended in May due to the coronavirus pandemic until September 30.
“In light of the difficulties reported by taxpayers and other stakeholders in filing Income Tax Returns and various audit reports for the Assessment Year 2024-22 under the Income-tax Act, 1961 (the “Act”), the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to further extend the due dates for filing Income Tax Returns and various audit reports for the Assessment Year 2024-22.”
After being extended to 30th September, 2024 by Circular No.9/2024 dated 20.05.2024, “the due date for furnishing the Assessment Year 2024-22 Return of Income is hereby further extended to 31st December, 2024,” it said.
Additionally, the CBDT has extended the ITR filing deadline for companies from November 30 to February 15, 2024.
As of January 15, 2024 and January 31, 2024, respectively, the deadlines for filing the tax audit report and the transfer pricing certificate have been extended from October 31 and November 30, respectively.
There is a two-month extension on the deadline for filing a belated or revised return of income, to March 31, 2024.
The finance ministry said on Wednesday that it is working with Infosys to fix glitches in the tax portal so that taxpayers have a smooth filing experience.
Earlier this month, the CBDT released the forms for the 2020-21 fiscal year.
Section 115BAC of the Internal Revenue Code gave taxpayers the option of choosing a new tax regime for the 2020-21 fiscal year.
