Deepawali: History
The origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India. There are various legends attached to the history of Deepawali. Some believe that it is the celebration of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu’s wedding, and some believe that it is Goddess Lakshmi’s birth celebration.
In Bengal, the festival is dedicated to the goddess Kali and some people worship Lord Ganesha also. For Jain people, Diwali marks the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining Nirvana.
This festival is also the celebration of Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya after his exile of 14 years and victory over Ravana. It is said that the Ayodhya people welcomed Ram with a row of Diyas, and lit the entire kingdom.

Deepawali signifies the victory of good over evil. The Diyas and lights are present everywhere indicating the eradication of dark shadows and evil. All people celebrate and pray together and create an atmosphere of purity and love. This festival is the celebration of prosperity in which people give gifts to family, friends, and employees.
