ODI World Cup openers for India
Shubhaman Gill is a young and talented player from Punjab who is a contender for the ODI World Cup openers job in 2023. He has been on a roll with some crucial shots lately.
He has already made an impression with a colossal hundred and has played two match-winning knocks. The 23-year-old cricketer is expected to play for the national side in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka.
In the first ODI, he smashed a blazing fifty while in the second game, he was unbeaten on 45. This was a sign of good form for him, and could set him on the path to a great career.
Shubhaman Gill has been a strong performer in the ODI format, and has played well in every chance he has been given. Whether he gets the opportunity to open in the upcoming World Cup remains to be seen.
But he has already made a strong case for his place in the team, and if he continues to produce in this way, he may not be overlooked for the ODI World Cup openers role.

Career highlights
Shubhaman Gill is a right-handed batsman from the Punjab region. He is known for his big runs in the domestic game. In fact, he is the second-highest run-scorer in India’s top-order.
Gill made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy. He was then selected for the Indian U-19 team, which went on to win the World Cup.
At the U-19 World Cup, he scored three hundred runs in five innings. He also won the Player of the Tournament award.
He then moved on to play for the Gujarat Titans IPL franchise, where he took advantage of his talents. His performances were one of the reasons for the Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2022 victory.
After a successful stint in the IPL, Shubhaman Gill was rewarded with a place in the Indian squad for the limited-overs series against New Zealand. Aside from his batting talent, he also possesses strong fielding skills.

Shubman Gill is a 21-year-old Indian cricketer who has become a sensation. A former Indian youth team captain, he has played in all three formats of the game. He is the youngest first-class batsman to score two centuries.
Born in 1999, Shubman Gill is a member of a Sikh family. His father is an agriculturist and his mother is a housewife. At a young age, he became interested in cricket. During his childhood, he watched cricket players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and others on television.
Eventually, he got the opportunity to train in the Punjab Cricket Association’s Academy. As a result, he was selected to play in the Punjab Under-16 cricket team. In 2017, he made his List-A debut against Vidarbha.
Later, Shubman Gill was selected to play for the India U-19 cricket team. He was a key figure in the team’s success against Australia. During the series, he averaged 124 runs in five matches and was a leading run-scorer.
He was named as a vice-captain for the U-19 Indian team at the 2018 U-19 Cricket World Cup. At the tournament, he was the leading run-scorer with a total of 351 runs.
Shubman Gill was also picked by the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1.8 crore in the 2018 IPL auction. This helped him earn over Rs 15 crore in the IPL. But he was eventually released by the team after the 2021 season.

Record-breaking innings
Shubhaman Gill made a record breaking innings of 116 runs in the third ODI against Sri Lanka. He broke the 24-year-old record set by Sachin Tendulkar. He was a key figure in India’s first innings total of 390 for the loss of six wickets.
The young batsman from Punjab showed good control. Several cricketers praised his performance.
Kohli and Gill added 131 runs for the second wicket. They shared a century stand off 90 balls.
Ravi Rampaul also played well. He scored 351, top-scoring for the Indian side. He was named Man of the Series.
In the first ODI against Zimbabwe, he was also selected as vice-captain. His record-breaking innings included two sixes.
Gill had only scored a solitary hundred in 15 ODI innings. The young batsman showed off his skill with straight drives and cover drives. It was a promising start for the Indian team.

Injury
The 2023 ICC World Cup is on the horizon. And there is some bad news for the Indian team. Shubman Gill has been injured. A shin injury has been diagnosed, and the Indian opener will not play the first Test against England.
As for the future, there is a possibility that Gill could return to India to undergo rehabilitation. Depending on the severity of the injury, he could miss three to four months of cricket.
After the injury, he was placed under observation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He has been undergoing intense training. His physio Nitin Patel and strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai will monitor his progress.
Gill had an excellent start to his IPL career, as he scored 132 runs in seven matches. During the first half of the season, he made a half century, a fifty, and one hundred.
However, the former Punjab wicketkeeper-batsman has been struggling with a shin injury. He suffered a stress reaction on his left lower leg during the final of the World Test Championship. He was flown back to India on a chartered flight in July.
Gill was expected to open the fifth Test against England. But he is unlikely to take part in the next two Tests in September. Instead, he will work on his recovery with the national squad.
With the team’s top players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma absent, the decision to replace Gill with KL Rahul is up in the air. Although Rahul is not a part of the team’s current T20I series against South Africa, his return could be an important factor in the team’s strategy.
