Happy Birthday Arunima Sinha – First female amputee to climb Mount Everest: Arunima Sinha was born on 20th July 1989, in Ambedkar Nagar near Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. She is the first female amputee to have climbed Mount Everest. Sinha is a seven-time Indian volleyball player also.
Her story became an inspiration to so many. Arunima Sinha is the daughter of an Indian Army officer. She thought that her life had changed when she took a step closer to her dream of joining the paramedical forces. However, life had something else for her.
Lost her leg in a robbery bid
To appear for the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) examination in Delhi, Sinha boarded the Padmavati Express train from Lucknow, on 12th April 2011. Robbers who wanted to snatch her gold chain and the bag have pushed her out of the general coach. Another train has crushed Sinha’s leg from below the knee, within moments. Then, she was rushed to the hospital.
The doctors had to cut off Sinha’s leg to save her. She was offered medical relief along with a job recommendation in CISF. At the time of taking treatment in the AIIMS, she decided to scale Mount Everest.
Inspired by Yuvraj Singh’s battle against cancer
She took the cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s cancer battle as an inspiration and resolved to do something with her life. She has done the basic mountaineering course from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. The first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest, Bachendri pal encouraged Sinha. With a prosthetic leg, she went climbing Mount Everest.
Her journey did not stop here. She also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kosciusko, Mout Vinson, Mount Elbrus, Mount Aconcagua, and Carstensz Pyramid. Sinha wrote a book named ‘Born Again on The Mountain’.
